Giving children living in poverty the chance of a better life: The proceeds from this year's PASS Late Year Benefit will go towards building a school in Sierra Leone, Africa. This is the fifth school that we have helped to finance through this concert series.
After Madagascar, Namibia and Malawi, we are now also involved in Sierra Leone. The civil war in Sierra Leone (1991-2002) was one of the most violent post-colonial conflicts on the African continent. Even today, there is still great poverty, hunger and, unfortunately, violence as a result. Crime is particularly high among young people.
More than half of the population can neither read nor write. Here, as everywhere else, education is the key to improvement. Pediatric neurologist Professor Jörg Klepper, MD, Chief Physician at the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at Aschaffenburg-Alzenau Hospital, and his wife, doctor Stephanie Klepper, are privately involved in the construction of an elementary school in rural Sierra Leone: the “New Hope School”.
“We are convinced by the concept of 'helping people to help themselves'. This means that the people there build their school, we support them with logistics and financial resources, they cover the roof themselves, burn the bricks and build their school. And we do it all with the expert support and network of the aid organization Commit and Act,” says Dr Jörg Klepper.
The NGO Commit and Act has been active in Sierra Leone for many years and focuses on training adults in the healthcare sector. Commit and Act also offers girls who have been victims of violence a shelter with medical, psychosocial and legal assistance. There are also projects for the prevention of violence, sustainable nutrition and education for children and adults.
